Here are 4 things that I think can be helpful. 1. Have specific goals like losing 10 lbs, or walking on the treadmill for an hour instead of 30 minutes. 2. In regards to eating, have a contingency plan. If you're in a situation where you have less control over your meal try to make healthier choices. Go for the vegetable and fruit options. 3. Start with realistic goals. Don't bite off more than you can chew (pardon the pun). Choose one thing to start with like not eating the chips or making sure you walk on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And 4. keep track of your progress. If you have a smart phone like an iphone or android phone there are lots of apps to help you track your weight, food, and exercise progress. The most important thing, though, is just getting started.
If you've seen my videos before then you know I'm always talking about eating a variety of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables as a way to stay healthy, which I make a point of doing myself. But I'm always trying to think of ways to make that message more helpful and less vague. I realized that maybe thinking about the colors of foods would be helpful. Try to eat fresh fruits and vegetables every day from these different color groups, red, orange, yellow, green and blue or purple, and you'll be getting all the beneficial antioxidants and nutrients to prevent disease and keep you healthy. You'll also be getting a good amount of fiber that will keep you regular and ward off colon cancer. Oh, and if you have a hard time thinking of a blue or purple food consider blueberries, blackberries, eggplant or aubergine, and purple potatoes.
